Miss Deaf Texas Struck, Killed By Train
    11:40 pm EST March 13, 2006

AUSTIN -- The reigning Miss Deaf Texas died Monday afternoon after being struck by a train in Austin.

Authorities said 18-year-old Tara Rose McAvoy was walking near railroad tracks when she was struck by a Union Pacific train. A witness told Austin television station KTBC the train sounded its horn right up until the collision occurred.

McAvoy, who had been deaf since birth, won the state title in June. The state pageant director said she represented Texas "with dignity and pride."

McAvoy was to represent Texas at the Miss Deaf America pageant.

hmmm - i wouldnt call her 'not to bright' , just deaf and can't hear a train -- though in such case walking on a track doesn't seem to good an idea .. i tracked down her pic ....

i have an "after" pic also -- but don't think this is the right forum for such ...

Well, if you can't hear, and walking down a train track, yeah, i'd say that is a pretty good definition of "not to bright" , at the very least lacking common sense

But one thing instantly came to mind....
how the hell did she at least NOT feel the vibration from the train coming
Even not being able to hear, she should have been able to feel it if she was on the line
I can feel them coming quite a way's before they get to me standing near the track let alone on it

I remember it. Brilliant. If you are too lazy or too stupid to even look before crossing a train track, its one up for evolution when you get creamed.

maybe she was deaf also as the guy next to her stopped as you could hear it coming (was it sounding it's horn also or was something like a bell ringing?) but for some strange reason she didn't

Train Killed Deaf Beauty Queen As She Was Text-Messaging

    POSTED: 11:06 am PST March 15, 2006

AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin police now say the reigning Miss Deaf Texas was killed by a freight train apparently while text-messaging family and friends on her cell phone.

Tara Rose McAvoy, 18, was killed Monday while walking along the Union Pacific tracks in South Austin. Police said she apparently was walking from her family's home to her mother's workplace when she was hit.

McAvoy was to represent Texas at the Miss Deaf America pageant this summer in Palm Desert, Calif.

Police said the train's crew spotted her and sounded the locomotive's horn, but got no response. The lead locomotive's snowplow -- which extends 16 inches from either track -- clipped McAvoy, killing her.

Police said her family said they'd never known her to walk along those tracks before.

Gene Mirus is a deaf studies instructor at Gallaudet, which is the nation's leading university for the hearing-impaired. He told the Austin American Statesman that many deaf people who think they can detect approaching trains by their vibrations are mistaken.
