Subtitles, yes. Compression, no.

Hi everyone:

I think I have found the reason behind my strange result after I added a subtitle to my AVI file (read https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=295607).

VirtualDubMod further compresses my already-compressed AVI file. For example, my AVI file has already been compressed from +1GB down to 700MB. After using VirtualDubMod to add a subtitle to my AVI file, I have a new AVI file that is now only +450MB. I believe this causes the inconsistency in quality of my new AVI file.

Is there any way I can add a subtitle to an AVI file, without further compressing the file?

Use the same bitrate as the 700MB source. 2-pass VBR is best. Actually, if you can, start with your original 1GB source. Each time you reencode you will lose a little quality. Or use soft subs which don't require any reencoding at all (but will require the right playback software).

Every time you change the video with VirtualDub it will decode the source, make the change(s), and encode the result.

There is no way to add hard subs without recompressing.
