  1. I downloaded a video off the newsgroups into a folder on my computer, and once it had completed downloading, I checked the folder to find that there were 51 files within...50 of the files were named .m4v.001; .m4v.002; .m4v.003, etc...and the 51st file was named m4v.PAR2...

I tried manually renaming one of the .m4v.001 files to just .m4v, and sure enough it changed the icon to the standard video playable file icon and I was able to open it in the assigned media player on my computer...

now rather than actually go through and rename all of the files by removing the serial number after the extension, I was hoping someone could let me know what program is meant to handle downloads like this?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...

Sounds like you need to use Winrar to open the file.

  3. No...that's not it...

I tried that, but its not recognized by winrar as a rar compressed archive (seeing as how there is just one .PAR file and no RAR files, that doesn't surprise me either...).

Anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks...

    Try this one: http://www.7-zip.org/

If this doesn't work the file may be corrupt or misnamed on purpose.

  5. what you what is HJSPLIT.exe to take all those .001,.002,.003.etc and combine them into 1 file and you will also need smartpar so it can read the .par2 file to do a verify.

you woul;d run smartpar 1st if everything verifies ok the run HJSPLIT

do a google search for these programs I believe they are freeware and they will tell you everything you need to know.

No need for HJSplit. Just use QuickPAR it can verify and if you have enough parts, join.

m4v though? If it is an mp4 perhaps you could leave a message to tell the poster to use the correct extension, m4v is for raw MPEG-4 video streams.
