There's a lot more to this than just converting ...

Convert each avi seperately to dvd format as individual tile's ... This will and dose prevent audio syncronization problem's from spreading through the entire group .

If clip 2 audio is out by 2 second's , but encoded as an individual title , then this 2 second problem will not be passed onto title 3 ...

This is where many user's are hitting the problem .

Resycronization of audio is a right pain ... it can be done simply with goldwave (not free) unless you can purchase pc user magazine for march 2006 in au ... but doing it with freeware tool's is for most newbies , a very complicated process .

Many dvdauthoring tool's like video and audio to have matching length's before they will even touch them ... in this case , super might be the ticket with problematic avi's .

The next problem is video format , size .

Anything smaller than the required / desired output resolution will / may have some pixelization in the video , so you need to make a decision as to the required size format that will be suitable for all of the clip's .

    Dvd accept's several format's :

    Nstc :

    720x480
    704x480
    352x480
    352x240

    Pal :

    720x576
    704x576
    352x576
    352x288

I found encoding to mpeg2 using bbmpeg allow's you to encode these smaller format's which are acceptable by ifoedit .

A basic dvd with menu structure can be created using dvdauthorgui .

As for authoring , import each title into pgcedit , then edit navigational command's to reflect the imported title's ... dont forget the command's for the button's in the menu as well .

It is prefered if the audio is in matching bitrate and format ... I normally use ac3 at 96kbit using besweet .

Using mixed audio bitrate can / will cause player issue's .

On a similar topic what sort of bitrate would be acceptable if you were wanting to cram several avi's onto one DVD? I've got some..er..sensitive homemade clips that I would like to convert to one DVD but don't know how low the bitrate can be and still have a decent, watchable quality.

Normally I try to keep it above 4000 (I use TMPEGnc DVD Author) and the audio at 192. I'm not after perfection and amazing quailty but I would like it OK.

Thanks for any help in advance as you guys have been a great help in the past

http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm might have some helpful info for you.

Or let something like convertxtodvd worry about the bitrates for you.
    If in doubt, Google it.
