    Hi,

I was lucky enough to be picked to edit a dvd my mother in-law (yah, I know) is having made from some old 8mm film. She's taking it to a camera shop and they'll make a dvd of it.

I'm suppose to go in and add titles of who's who.

    1. I'm guessing I'll need to convert this dvd to an editable format. I'm looking for some help as to what format is best for editing and what's best for converting from dvd (home movie, not copyright or encription)

    2. I have premiere pro and wanted to be sure that I can do this with it.

    3. What would you recommend to burn it back to dvd.

I did some home movies with a digital camcorder and it works great but I've been doing it on my mac with imovie and idvd - pretty simple to work with.

I also have a pc with premiere, dvd burner and tons of storage so I can do it with either the PC or MAC. I know there's more available for the pc when it comes to video (non-professional anyways) on the pc.

Thank you for all your help,
    Joe

If you want to edit it with Premiere, you can either pruchase the Mainconcept mpeg editing plugin, which allows you to edit in native mpeg-2, or convert the DVD footage to a lossless compression format, such as huffyuv or a lagarith. Conversion to uncompressed or lossless will take up a lot of space however.

As it is unprotected, you can simply copy the vobs across to your HDD, use VobMerge to create one large vob, then load this into virtualdubmpeg2 to convert it a lossless format. From there you can edit to your hearts content.

    Thank you!!!

I got the mainconcept plugin installed and ready to go. What do I need to extract the mpg2 from the disk?

    Thanks again!

If the 8mm film hasn't been transferred yet, get it done properly and to DV format tape or uncompressed hard drive which will be directly editable in Premiere Pro.
