I had tried few DVD rippers by now, and for ALL of those programs I used, I encounter one problem that is annoying and make me want to delete the long-converted movie file.

I am trying to backup DVD into DivX format, I choose the option for the output resolution to be the SAME as the DVD resolution. After I finished the backup, I check the resolution, which is 720x480 (3:2) -- I thought it would be the same resolution as what DVD is. However, when I tried opening the movie in full screen, and compare with opening the DVD in full screen, the resolution/ratio size is NOT THE SAME! I thought it would be some problem with the program itself, but everytime I tried with new program, I will always have this problem...

Is there a way to fix this problem, or to make sure I will get the EXACTLY the same resolution I get with DVD?

    Thanks in advanced,
    -Nattawat

DVDs are resized to 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio when played. But AVI does not support this(or it might but most software players ignores it) so convert to a 4:3(like 640x480) or 16:9(640x384) resolution instead.

  3. DVDs are 720x480. You're making your AVIs 720x480. Same resolution. However, DVDs get resized. If your DVD is 16:9, then it gets resized to 854x480 (480 x 16/9 = 853.33). AVIs are usually not 4:3 or 16:9, but 1:1, and only get scaled. However, some software players can do the same thing that DVD players do. Try BS Player, or, better yet, Media Player Classic. Both can resize by 16:9 or 4:3.

Or resize to 854x480 before encoding for AVI.

Edit: Baldrick beat me, but since I took the time to write it out, here's pretty much the same thing in slightly different words.
