I'm looking into creating animation (consecutive images) for HD broadcast. It will be 1920 x 1080 interlaced.

What has me scratching my head is this... what's the dpi?

If I was doing standard video, it would be 720 by 480 (or 640 by 480) images with 72 dpi.

dpi doesnt matter for video -

also you dont create animation interlaced -- you do ussually 30fps (progressive) animation renders - or sometimes 24fps if for film

you could do 30fps progressive renders - then use shake or fusion (or even AE) and create interlaced

    dpi = dots per inch
This is a printer or scanner issue.

Video is defined by horizontal pixels by vertical pixels (progressive)

Interlace separates odd and even lines.

    I fogot the question

    720x480 is SDTV not HDTV
640x480 is square pixel old school frame buffer.

My plan is to create animation in Flash at 1920 by 1080. The exported frames will be 72 dpi, so I'll stick with that.

I'll be taking elements into After Effects and compositing there. I'm not sure whether I'll be rendering sequential (progressive) images or interlaced AVIs. It depends on what my client asks for.

Is AVI an appropriate delivery method for HDTV?

Best to get that worked out with your client.

Some alternatives. 1920x1080 uses square pixels

    1920x1080p/58.94 fps (16:9 progressive)
    1920x1080i/29.97 fps (16:9 interlace)
1920x1080p/23.94 fps (16:9 film rate progressive)

    1440x1080p/58.94 fps (4:3 or H compressed 16:9 progressive)
    1440x1080i/29.97 fps (4:3 or H compressed 16:9 interlaced)
    1440x1080p/23.94 fps (4:3 or H compressed 16:9 film rate)
