  1. Of course we all know about using VirtualDub to frame serve an avi when we want to make some changes to it, and using the .vdr file as the video input in an encoder like TMPGEnc. This works fine, but there are times when I'd like to use TMPGEnc XPRESS, which for some strange reason will not use a .vdr file. The .vdr loads ok, and I can use all the functions of Xpress, but when I go to actually start the encode, I get the error message that "***.vdr is not a valid input" or something.

Since both programs are based on the same encoding engine, it seems there should be a way to make this work. Does anyone know of a way to coax Xpress into using a .vdr? Is there some setting I'm missing? Thanks.

I had the same problem, the old 2.5 did accept .vdr, the new 3.0 will not.

What do you use VDub for? I used it to cut commercials out and
that can be done also in TMPGenc 3.0, so I changed the approach.

Now I do not use VDub any longer but have switched to Avisynth.

  3. I use virtualdub if I need to add subtitles that aren't being read properly by TMPGEnc's directshow filters, etc. I've read a lot of great things about avisynth, but frankly, I'm not looking to learn all that scripting stuff. I've already learned how to use so many softwares that this video encoding stuff is on the verge of becoming a full time.

It's easy (but I cant find the link):
    Make a simple script:
    Avisource("C:\.... \your.vdr", audio=false). Call it your.avs.
and load this .avs into Xpress.
