Wow, $499! I might take the plunge today. If I don't like it, I'll just return it and wait it out.

Take your money, and save it for a Pioneer. They're not much more expensive, and much better. Or, wait and see if they decide on a standard. The HP drive can write to ONLY DVD+RW discs, which are around $20 a piece. There is currently no DVD+R discs in existance. On the Other hand, The Pioneer has the ability to write to DVD-R AND DVD-RW (but not DVD+RW) discs. HP doesn't expect to have DVD+R discs untill, a rather vague, "next year"
screw them.

Check this out if you want a dvd-rw. Don't know anything about it personally but it almost gives me a big chubby.
