  1. This is the guide I'm trying to use...

    http://web.telia.com/~u31220486/dvd2avi/dvd2avi.htm

I start to have problems on the 5th step, when it asks me to use VirtualDub. When it asks me to "Start VirtualDubMod and open the "pseudo AVI" produced by VFAPICONV"... I get the following error message.

"[!] Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'vifp' (unknown).
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to
decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media
Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this
    video."

I'm not sure what I need to do from here, any help would be greatful.

    Thank you.

I just rip with DVD Decrypter, then open the VOB directly in Virtualdubmod, and save as a reglar AVI.

  3. I tried doing that, but when I convert direct from VOB to AVI, the output file is almost 3gigs... and the video I'm converting is more more than 10 minutes long. Unless I'm doing something wrong in the file converstion process, 3 gigs seems to be way too big for a 10 minute video.

Don't really understand why you get that error in VirtualDub - I've never had any trouble doing it that way - that's why I wrote the guide that way!
Opening the VOB directly in VirtualDubMod might also work, and obviously does, as you've managed to get an AVI out of VDubMod. That you get an enormous file size is most likely due to not setting up compression properly - have you set VDubMod to full processing and configured the codec? (DivX or XviD suggested.)

  5. I'm having the same problem. I reinistalled Windows recently, and thus also reinstalled VirtualDubMod as well. I'm not an experienced user, but I'm not a total n00b either, and I've never had this problem before. I HAVE valid Video for Windows codecs installed--is there some way to let VirtualDubMod know that?

Use AVISynth instead of VFAPI. VFAPI means converting to RGB24, as such it hasn't been recommended for some years now for XviD/DivX encoding.

If you don't want the hassle of dealing with AVISynth, try AutoGK, FairUse Wizard, StaxRip, AVI.Net, etc.

  7. VirtualDUbMod:

Video -> Fast Recompress, Normal Recompress, or Full Processing Mode
Video -> Compression... select codec and configure
