  1. Hi there,

Im new to the forums & burning.

I got a new Sony DVD Burner installed on my machine, bundled with Nero 6.6 & Roxio 8 Home Suite.

    1. Which is better a better DVD burning software Nero or Roxio?

    2. Difference between R & RW I can make out so about Double layer, is double layer & dual layer the same thing?

    3. What’s the difference between DVD+R & DVD-R & like wise DVD+RW & DVD-RW, In your personal experience, which is a better media *+* OR *–*, in case of either *R* or *RW*?

    4. At what speeds should the DVDRs (+ -) & DVDRWs (+ -) be burnt for a good output.

    5. Would you care to give yr comments on the following:

"Sony’s new DVD burner incorporates new 8.5GB DVD-R Dual Layer, DVD+R double layer burning and dual format 4.7GB DVD burning. Double/Dual Layer discs let you store up to 8.5GB on a single DVD+R Double Layer or DVD-R Dual Layer disc, giving you plenty of room for more video and audio entertainment, digital photo archives, and information storage. DVD+R burning speed is a blazing 16X max, burning a full DVD in approximately 6 minutes. Double Layer and Dual Layer Recording speed is 4X max. DVD+RW speeds are 8X max for DVD+RW and 6X max for DVD-RW respectively. Ultra fast 48X max CD-R burning means you no longer need a separate CD Burner for good performance. What hasn’t changed is the DRU-810A comes bundled with an unbeatable Nero 6.6 software suite and also includes a black front panel to match black colored PCs.”

    6. Are the following correct?

    a. -R better in versatility?

    b. R more stable than RW?

    c. Burn speed slightly lower but not lowest for a media?

    d. Dual layer & single layer burning processes are the same OR some change is needed while burning a DL?

    8. Stand alone DVD players work better with *- R* than *+ R*, can they play *+/- RWs* too OR standalone players don’t support RWs?

    9. What are a few good soft wares to burn a movie to a DL DVD, should the media be +/- R or +/- RW?

    10. What soft wares support a burnt movie that would play BOTH on a DVD-ROM optical drive & stand alone DVD player?

    11. Should I look for the latest firmware updates for my Sony Burner?

    12. Regarding a Movie DVD can it be burnt directly or copied first to hard drive?

    13. What is reasonable good media in your view & experience for both +-R, +-RW?

    Hoping to hear from you.

    Regards.

Your SONY 810A is a REBADGED BENQ 1640 drive. I would suggest you crossflash your drive to the official BENQ FIRMWARE so you can use QSUITE which is a tool to tweak your burns. It remembers the write strategy on different brands of dvd media. This drive can be booktyped to DVDROM. Check out the BENQ FORUM at CdFreaks.com for more information.

Roxio and Nero installed on the same pc can cause software conflicts. There are some who have both installed with no problems but in my opinion Roxio isn't the best software to use for DVD BURNING. There are other free software like DECRYPTER & IMG TOOL BURN that you could use.

DUAL LAYER & DOUBLE LAYER are the same. RW rewriteable media which can be used more than once. There's no BEST between DVD-R/+. DVD+R can be booktyped to DVDROM with the burner you have. Use good quality dvd media and you won't have problems. With BENQ's QSUITE you can burn at a faster speed than the disc is rated for.

My suggestion is you do a lot of reading at the BENQ FORUM as well as the guides that are to the left of this forum<<<<.

    1. Which is better a better DVD burning software Nero or Roxio?
    >Nero

    2. Difference between R & RW I can make out so about Double layer, is double layer & dual layer the same thing?
    >Yes

    3. What’s the difference between DVD+R & DVD-R & like wise DVD+RW & DVD-RW, In your personal experience, which is a better media *+* OR *–*, in case of either *R* or *RW*?
    >+R or -R both work well with most all players/burners

    4. At what speeds should the DVDRs (+ -) & DVDRWs (+ -) be burnt for a good output.
    >The speed of the media or the burner.

    5. Would you care to give yr comments on the following:

"Sony’s new DVD burner incorporates new 8.5GB DVD-R Dual Layer, DVD+R double layer burning and dual format 4.7GB DVD burning. >Not sure what comments would be meaningful.

    6. Are the following correct?

    a. -R better in versatility?
    >About the same these days.

    b. R more stable than RW?
    >Yes.

    c. Burn speed slightly lower but not lowest for a media?
    >Burn at the media or the burners speed. Lower speed may just take longer and not improve anything.

    d. Dual layer & single layer burning processes are the same OR some change is needed while burning a DL?
    >You need software that can burn DL. DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn for two, even Nero works well sometimes for DL. BTW, DL is expensive and not always easy to burn properly.

    8. Stand alone DVD players work better with *- R* than *+ R*, can they play *+/- RWs* too OR standalone players don’t support RWs?
    >Newer ones don't usually have problems with either, but we have a 'DVD Players' list to the left that may tell you.

    9. What are a few good soft wares to burn a movie to a DL DVD, should the media be +/- R or +/- RW?
    >The ones mentioned above for burning. Verbatim +R is the most problem free and recommended media presently.

    10. What soft wares support a burnt movie that would play BOTH on a DVD-ROM optical drive & stand alone DVD player?
    >Most all of them. Compatibility problems are mostly with the media brand used and which standalone player you are using.

    11. Should I look for the latest firmware updates for my Sony Burner?
    >I would try it first the way it is, but that's just my opinion. You can upgrade the firmware any time.

    12. Regarding a Movie DVD can it be burnt directly or copied first to hard drive?
    >I wouldn't try burning on-the-fly if you don't want problems. Burn from your hard drive for the highest success rate.

    13. What is reasonable good media in your view & experience for both +-R, +-RW?
    >Everyone has their favorites and it may be different brands for different write formats. Taiyo Yuden is probably the most popular, but check 'DVD media', again to the left.

All this above is mostly my opinion, others may differ.
