  1. I am officially sick of it, i looked through the DVD section, but it wasnt much help, can anyone recommend an affordable dvd player which plays most types of data discs? I guess id need most avi, ogm, mkv, etc codecs, all the main ones anyways.

    No.

DVD players play DVD-Video spec only (MPEG files authored correctly).

A few do extra things, like some DIVX or MP3 support, but that's it.

You would need a computer that plugs into a tv to do what you want.

I agree,I'm using an old PIII/WinMe computer hooked up to my home A/V system.
    A fast CPU or WinXP isn't necessary:just a DVD-ROM,mouse,videocard that has tv-out and a soundcard.
Add a keyboard and a modem and you can be a couch potato all weekend.

  6. ok, If i build a home theatre pc. I'll need a video card that outputs to display on my tv, correct? So, what kind of video card will I need? I thought like the basic S-video connections used a low resolution and had a poor image on your TV. Whats the best way to do this, Im guessing the video card is the main concern, what should i look into when getting a videocard for this sort of project? I want a videocard that wont compromise the picture.

It depends on your TV set. If it has S-video inputs, fine. Component video is better, but not as common. DVI or HDMI even better, but requires one of the newest TVs. If you use S-Video, or worse, composite, I wouldn't plan on using the TV as a computer monitor. Not good resolution for reading computer text. Fine for video viewing. You can still use your existing computer monitor for computer work.

How does one become officially sick? Does that require a note from your doctor?

I think you need a video butler.

  9. hmm, so to get the best results u need one of those new and fancy tvs. Too rich for my blood. Or a projector I guess could work nicely, but then again, too rich for my blood.

    "avi, ogm, mkv, etc codecs"
    Shouts computer playback to me.

Even a fancy TV or projector only understands composite, S-Video, analog component or uncompressed digital (e.g. 480/576i, 480/576p, 720p, 1080i).

Why do you think a fancy TV is the solution?
Maybe you should restate your problem.
