  1. I played an MPG movie, in 16:9 widescreen format, and captured a frame to make a still image. But why do I get the following different sizes from two different players please?

    PowerDVD: 768 x 432 (Correct aspect ratio)
    NeroShowTime: 720 x 576 (Incorrect - squeezed sideways)

Both are correct. Showtime has grabbed the frame as it appears on the DVD - it is anamorphic and the adjusted at playback, but as raw image data, it looks like this.

PowerDVD has grabbed the adjusted frame instead. Both are correct, just choose the one that suits your need.

  3. 720x576 is how it actually appears on the DVD. Your TV will size it appropriately depending on it's aspect. Take the 720x576 and resample it to 850x576. That is what your 16x9 TV will do.
