  1. I would like to know how to insert chapter points into preexisting divx, xvid files.

A chapter break about every 10 minutes.

    Can Virtual dub do this?

    Thanks!

    You can't.

The new Divx container apparently supports them, but I haven't seen any software that creates it, or a player that supports it. Standard divx/Xvid files do not allow for chapter points etc.

Chapter points for easy navigation when you combine multiple files.

Well there is really no such thing as an XviD file, other than a raw XviD stream. The DivX media format as already covered supports chapters and can contain XviD. mkv, mp4, ogm and dsm also support chapters and can contain XviD.

Basically what it comes down to is that the container not the video codec determines whether chapters are possible.

DivXMux should be able to do chapters if you can write the xml input for them.

For mkv, ogm and mp4 are much easier since they support the ogm chapter format which is just a text file which you can easily create. Then again maybe there is a convesion util for .divx?

Should point out that the only current standalone support would be for mp4 and .divx.
