this drive seems very tempermental. when i turn it on, it sometimes reads the dvd and sometimes doesn't. when it doesn't, the icon states: dvd rom with the text "CD Drive" next to it. when it does work the icon states: dvd rom, "DVD RW." i have to turn it on and off to get it to read my dvds. i have my benq 1640 in an enclosure. is this a known problem? is there a fix? tia.

Are you sure the problem is with th drive and not with the specific enclosure controller that it's conected to?

Move the drive into your machine (assuming you have a spot for it in your desktop PC) and see if it has similar issues that require rebooting to resolve.

if this drive is attached to a notebook, try a different notebook with the same enclosure, and also try using a different enclosure with your notebook and note the results.

And as always, please post back with your observations/results so we can close this issue out.

A little troubleshooting goes a long way.

    Cheers!

Cdfreaks.com has a thread regarding using enclosures with BENQ drives. As mentioned it would depend on the chipset of your enclosure.
