  1. With all this discussion about how long a CD lasts, I thought I would ask the next burning question, how long should you keep a blank CD before burning it.

Personally, I stocked up heavily on Kodak Golds in 1999 and 2000 and only use them for storing jpg files. These blanks are now 6 and 7 years old and burn just fine - at 24X, even though the pack says 8X is the max. The disks scan fine and they have had no read problems to date.

Contrast that with a spindle of Princo junk CD's that I had for 3 years and then they started to have burn issues.

    What are other peoples thoughts/experiences?

I've had some "SKY" silver-silver since 1997. They are only 74 minutes, so I only use them every now and then. But when I DO use them, they burn fine and I have never had an issue with them not retaining their burn data.

Quality disk like Kodak will outlast you.

I use some old Ricoh Platinum 8x CD-R which now seem to have become extinct. I don't know how old they are, but they still burn just fine and hold the data. They claim a 200-year life span on the package. I think they're ideal for audio CD's because I like to burn audio discs at 2x. Still got 160 of them left to go.

I cannot say the same about some cheap discs like Gigastorage, Princo, etc.

I only buy FUJI CD-R discs that say MADE IN JAPAN as these are made by Taiyo Yuden.

I sometimes use the MAXELL CD-R packs that say MADE IN JAPAN as those are just as good. Only the MAXELL packages that says "CD-R PRO" are the MIJ discs.
