I was wonder has anyone ever tried to replaced the DVD burner in the 5045 with a double Layer burner? I purchased a Lite On DL burner 1693S for my PC and I tried to play a DL disk in the 5045 and it would not play it.

As a matter of fact, your 1693s is one of the most popular donors.
What are you trying to achieve?

  3. I would say putting a dual layer burner into a recorder manufactured with a single layer drive will result in a single layer recorder... the firmware in the recorder itself probably won't know what do do with a second layer and I suggest it would just ignore it...

Are you sure? My ILO dvdr04 (lite-on lvw5001 clone) will, but the disc in question must be bitset to DVD-Rom. Otherwise its a no go.
