    Error code -2048 is:
"Not correct file type, Quicktime cannot play this file."

This often occurs when you don't have the proper
codec installed to play the file in QT.

You mention xvid and .ac3....most likely you don't have
    the 3ivx 4.51 codec installed,
or the QT AC3 decoder installed.
google for them, or check the "Tools" section on the left.

Have you tried dropping the AVI into Toast? Certainly once you have the req'd codec(s) (and maybe even without them) Toast will do the conversion and burning.

Open the offending file in Quicktime, pull up the Movie Info,
and tell us what Quicktime says about the file....

or, if it still won't pull it up, try VLC, and do the same thing.
or ffmpegx, drag and drop the file into the left side window
in the Summary tab, and tell us what codecs IT THINKS IT
    NEEDS...

for the file "my movie-(DivX.DVD).avi" ....when I try and pull up the movie info it immediately throws an 'Alert' window saying the quicktime cannot open the file, that it is not a file that quicktime understands (-2048)....tewels

If you can't get ffmpegx ( version 0.09U or 0.09V)
to open the summary window, then I'd say it's your dual core....

You should be able to launch ffmpegx and drag and drop this
file into it's main window, and get a summary....
