    Hello
I have captured interlaced DV from TV and i'm interested in converting to either xvid or divx. Now with both encoders, I have selected "interlaced source" and this preserves the interlace. Problem is, everytime I play the resulting file, it doens't look good because you can see the interlace lines. In other words, no media player plays the xvid or divx interlace properly.

The question is: Do i de-interlace in Vdub (and i'm assuming this looses quality) or is there something that can be done???

    Thanks.

You're probably better off deinterlacing it. It should look better in a compressed format. I believe the quality loss compared to leaving it interlaced should be negligible.

  3. If the sources were originally film you may be able to inverse telecine. Otherwise try one of the smart deinterlacing filters for VirtualDub. The last option is to use VirtualDub's own deinterlacing filters.

  4. And your best option would be to use the deinterlacing filters available in AviSynth, such as KernelDeint or TDeint, which are better than anything available for use in VDub.

As jagabo said, if it's film and can be IVTC'd, that's how you'll reencode with best quality, also using one of the AviSynth IVTCs.

If you want small files, & aren't constricted to divx or xvid, might look at wmv where you can retain interlacing. Try a short test & see if the results are woth it vs deinterlace or ivt?
