  1. I have a film on my pc (Master and Commander) which plays fine on VLC Player but not on any other software.
I want to play it on my Plasma using my externall HDD but when I transfer it, my Media ctre does not recognise it.

I thought it was a .TS file, but I am not sure. All my other TS files play flawlessly.

How do i tell what the file extension is ?

The file is about 12GB in size.

    Thanks for any help

Use windows explorer to find the file. The filename
will be in the form of: filename . extension .

What follows the dot(.) is the file extension.

  3. Sorry, I should explain.

I am pretty good on pc's,but the problem is, there is no file extension on the file i have.

I have tried naming it to .TS, .mpg to see if these work and they make no difference.

VLC player seems to play the file with any extension i put on it even ridiculous extensions like .sdfdsdfsdf just to prove a point.

    ANy more ideas ?

    Thx

When you right click on the file in windows explorer and select properties what does the type of file say it is?

I'm assuming you have 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked in Folder Options? If not, you can type anything you want after a (.) and it's meaningless.

  6. I know what you mean by that, and it is actually changing the extension and not just the name.

I just need to find a program that can tell me what type of file it is

what does mediainfo, avicodec, gspot say? or doesn't vlc has a video properties?

  9. When playing in VLC right click on the video and select Miscellaneous -> Media Info. That will give you some hints.

Even better: drag the file into GSpot. It can identify most media files even if you remove the extension.

  10. I am pretty sure it is a TS file although i can't say for sure. Will just have to work on it.

The extensions of the files are .001, .002, .003 and so on until .099

They are obviously not correct extensions, so the have to be renamed.

    Thanks anyway

It's pieces of a bigger whole. Can't be reliably treated/played until you've reassembled the whole.

  13. Try something like HJSplit to join the pieces together.

  14. So these are MULTIPLE files?

    Specify size of indivudual piece.

Specify size of all pieces added together.

    Specify source.

Given size of 12Gig, assuming total for entire video, would be too big for a single DVD (unless extras from second or third disk are included) and too small for HD vid (unless all files together are larger than this number).
