  1. I'm in the market for a new DVD player since Toshiba's customer service swindled me out of my still-functional SD-3950 (long story) and I could use some advice in finding a new model.

Most important is finding a unit that has a TIME REMAINING function. I'm baffled that so many players don't have this function at all! What's worse, it's never mentioned in any reviews or descriptions of the product.

Other important functions are DVD+R playback, zoom, chapter skip (that lets you hit "skip" as many times as needed instead of waiting for the DVD to catch up on each and every chapter), CD/mp3 playback, PAL/NTSC conversion (not that important), bitrate display (never even seen this *except* on my old Toshiba model) and oh yeah, playing the entire title instead of starting 1/2 late or stopping 2 seconds early.

I'm looking to spend $60-70, really can't afford more.

  2. I have a Ichiban DVD27 - cheap & good, with disc/chapter remaining time OSD.

    Hope this helps, good luck...

  4. I haven't seen any Apex DVD players for sale in a long while. Do they still make 'em?

I believe the Panasonic DVD-S29 does everything you ask except the PAL/NTSC conversion. Also my DVD-S27 and DVD-S47 have played DVD+R discs before even though it doesn't say they're supported on the website. They both also have the bitrate display AND play back DVD-RAM which I like.

  8. I tried the Panasonic S29, it didn't have time remaining plus the remote conflicted with my Panasonic VHS/DVD Recorder (which also doesn't have time remaining.) Thank God for Fry's 30-day return policy.

That Pioneer DV-383S model looks awesome! I think I'm gonna go for that one!

If it's like my other 3 (2 of them current) Panasonic players you would press the display button twice, then toggle the up/down navigation buttons to switch between time elapsed/time remaining (on the screen and the display of the unit). Also you can press display once and choose TIME from the menu where you get time elapsed or time remaining options. I sure hope they didn't take that away on the S29. My S27, S47 and F87 all have it and I love it.

The remote conflict can be resolved by choosing another "remote code" for the DVD Recorder remote. There are 3 codes to choose from. The Panny players are set to code 1 so change the recorder to 2 or 3.
