This is the first time I have tried this. So, If there is something you don't agree with feel free to flame me.

I used three programs for this test:

    1. AutoGK
    2. Avi.net
    3. SimpleDivx

The source file is DVD NTSC (720X480 29.970fps), 33 Seconds in length and has a file size of 26.88MB.

The only setting I couldn't make the same, was the ouput resolution with AutoGordian Knot. Only the width can be set at 720. All other settings were the same for all programs. All were converted to Xvid. I would have used Divx but, again with AutoGordian Knot you must have Divx 6 Pro installed. It won't convert to Divx on the free version. The Video Size was set at 1900MB. I keep it at that size for larger sources. Two Passes were made. All times are in minutes.

Most programs use a processing procedure (I'll call it PP ) before the encoding actually starts. The PP and the total process times will be listed separately.

    AutoGordian Knot output file:

    20.74MB 4825Kbps 720X544 23.976 PP: 1:58 Total Time: 4:28
(This file when played had black lines on each side. The others didn't)

    Avi.net output file:

    46.75MB 11545Kbps 720X480 29.970 PP: :01 Total Time: 2:13

    SimpleDivx output file:

    17.02MB 3881Kbps 720X480 29.970 PP: :01 Total Time: 1:12

I only tested these three programs. Your results may vary based upon your processor speed.

    I'm not sure I follow:
The Video Bitrate was set at 1900MB
    • Generally, bitrate is measured in kbps.
If the file size differ, they must be encoded @ different bitrates.
Generally, the AVI bitrate is lower than the mpeg source bitrate, around 1000 kbps is not unusual.
720 is rarely used as AVI width - 640 is more common (and the height reduced accordingly to keep aspect ration)
I'm not trying to critizise - just making suggestions to improve the comparision.

  4. What were your sitting per set up? Why are the sizes of the final avis so different? Did you do 2 pass on all projects? Trying to decide on what program to use to do my first DVD to divx/xvid convertion.

    Mats:

Ooops, typo. The post has been corrected. I didn't set the output for bitrate, just for size. I left the size large for two reaseon. To let them determind their own size and I leave my software at 1900MB for file shareing purposes. I convert my avi's to 720X480 for backup purposes. I store the DVDs in avi, if needed, later convert them back to DVD. The conversions to DVD are quite good.

    Blue:

All the settings were the same in all three programs. As stated above 2 passes were used. The quality was very good from all three.
