    Hi,

Im trying to back up a box set of DVDs, 14 discs all in all.
Now 8 of them have gone through fine, but the rest have similar faults and no matter how I approach them they always fail.

    1) initially I'm using latest Shrink version. but this kept reporting i/o overlapping error.
    2) so tried DVDdycrypter, this reported errors and all retries failed
3)so tried DVDfab (free) again error.
    4) tried trial version of Alldvd, again faild.

Each disc 'bad' disc fails at the same piont in each application. eg, one disc reports errors at the start so that Alldvd reports 'check disc, or set region'.
Region 2 is set and disc is fine in stand alone player.
For the same disc DVDfab says it cant read it.
DVD shrink cant analys it (i/o overpal)
DVDdecrypter has a big error message.

For another disc it will be about 98% of the way through before stopping.

I feel this is a general problem that affects all the software but not sure what it could be.
Alldvd does suggest using rcp1.com but Im unsure if thats necessary.

    Any help appreciated.
    Jim

  2. When DVD Decrypter gets a lot of errors at a certain point, I use DVDFab Decrypter. It will run slow through the part that has errors but will end up copying everything.
I know you tried this for the first DVD but what about the one that got to 98%

    Drag2f2f, Abond,

    Thanks for your quick responces.
    Ive been a little more scinetific in my approach and having read your replys heres the result(s);

Downloaded DVD Region and CCS free, and installed.

Tried AnyDvd, Failed to Read DVD:
1, Dirty 2, Damaged 3, Region RPC2 locked 4, RPC2 device not assigned a region or Patch may be required.

Tried ISO Buster, Failed Bad sectors reported.

    Tried Shrink, Failed I/O Overlapped

Tried DVDfab express, Get DVD information failed (4096)

    DVDdecrytper, I/O error

Opened AnyDVD info and it reports that:
    Drive region 2
    Layers 1
    CSS Protected
    PAL
    Media Region 2
    RCE not found
    DVD Structure ok
    Structural copy protect not found
    Auto run not found
    Emulating Drive with Region 2

DVD region + css free info shows
    Drive region 2
    User change 4
    Vendor reset 4
    The disc hasnt css Protection
    Disc region 12345678

Then tried Nero Recode 2: Failed to read from file I/O overlap

Thought this was all pointing to a hardware/ OS setup type thing.
Checked BIOS setting, and device is listed as CD ROM, auto detection changes it to DVD ROM, but after saving and rebooting the BIOS says its a CD ROM again. Not sure if this makes any differance.
Also I can find nothing wrong with the disc, it plays on the computer or DVD player.

    Hope this all helps,
    Jim

    Quick update.

Found an update for the firmware of my burner (nec DVD RW ND 3540a)
Flashed, failed, repeated umpteen times. Finally it updated.

Tried ripping again, but failed as above

Probably a stupid question on my part, but are the discs in decent shape -- do they play completely in your NEC drive & stand-alone players?

    mikiem, hech54,
Hi, Thanks for taking time to assist me.

The discs do play in the NEC drive and on my stand alone DVD player, albeit I have not watched the whole disc right the way through in either player.
I downloaded DADfab the other day and have checked the version number and it is current.

Although Im new to this I get the feeling that it must be something common to all the failed discs. As all the software is having the same problems, in my opinion.

Could it be that maybe the disc/file sizes might be causing problems with Win98SE or a software clash (Ive disabled Incd on boot up)?
Ive been scanning cdfreaks forums and some mention checking the UDMA2 is set. But I cannot find anything for this. Device manager shows the drive as a CD ROM. DMA is checked and the drivers are microsoft.

Hopefully somebody may be able to shed some light on this soon.

Have you tried a search to see if others have had the same problems with the title in this box set and possibly what they did to correct.

    Hello,

Ive googled it and nothing relevent comes up.
Which leads me to suspect that backing up should not be a problem.
    Hmmmmmmm, its got me stumped.

You said in one of your replies that you have Windows 98 Second Edition, and it also says that in your profile. That's a fairly old OS. You might have to bite the bullet and get XP.

I know a lot of software products say they work on older OS's, but sometimes you wonder if they really test them or not.

    May be....
The trouble is I have some light guns (Dual set up) (ACT LABS), and although they are only a year or so old, Act-Labs have not made an XP driver for it.
    Apparently XP cannot support them.

You can also install XP in a dual boot config so you can keep 98 for the light-guns and use XP for everything else. The only issue is you have to keep at least the win98 boot disk FAT32.

Can you rip any aother discs successfully ? If not, I would say it is faulty hardware.

    Hello again,

OK, tried the latest version of DVDfab and 'de nada'. Failed to get data, as before.
Installed XP Pro and now have dual boot system, decided to go with NTFS in case FAT32 was problem. Loaded DVDshrink and DVDfab.

Shrink failed, cyclic error this time. And DVDfab failed as before, failed to get data.

It must now be a Hardware issue it seems.
Strange that some Discs have worked and others have not.

So, in desperation I wondered if the PSU is functioning properly so I pulled two cooling fans, and to my supprise DVDshrink started but failed at 88%.
Tried with DVDfab and after 6 hours 40 mins it finished reading a single layer disc which I burned with Nero and it worked!!!
    Blime.
Now, tried another disc and.......... failed to get disc info again....
Got my meter on the PSU with the machine running and Voltage is good, +12.04v and + 4.7v, from the PSU but maybe a bad connection somewhere

Unless somebodies got anymore bright ideas Im gonna have to accept defeat

  17. yea, check your IDE cable......maybe it's starting to die out on you...if it's not that, then maybe your drive's laser is dying out? just going by the fact that you got a cyclic redundancy error..that says that the drive isnt reading the disc for some reason......or in sony's infamous words, disc read error.........another option that may work is checking into cleaning the drive's laser out....may just be a dust buildup or something of that nature....

    Well,

Ive now finished backing up my box set.
Not sure exactly what was wrong but DVDfab express on XP finally did it!

Ive re-connected 1 cooling fan as it is for the CPU, and left 1 disconnected.
Another strange thing I noticed though, At first I thought it was just me but, It appeaers that if I booted up the computer with the disc already in the draw, the disc was read much faster.
eg, the last disc I abandoned after 6hrs of DVDfab reading/copying files.
The next day I resumed, and it was all done in under a hour.
    Strange.
I dont like it when I dont know what the problem was/is.

But hay, a wins a win.

Thanks to all you who've helped.
I've learned loads, and if it wasnt for people like you giving your time and effort the internet would be worse off.
    Keep up the good work.
