Dvd picture dark and flickers- 'wrong disc type' error

Never had problems with dvd backups before, but have a couple that won't play. Tried 2 different players: One player gives a 'WRONG DISC TYPE' error, my apex ad-600a recognizes the disc, but picture is almost totally black and picture tracks up or down. Usually the apex can play just about any disc.

Apex was flashed with firmware (1.76) to allow dvd-r and haven't had probs til now.tried dvd-r, dvd+r discs. Tried nero and decrypter.

At a guess, format issues. Is it a PAL disc ? Can you play PAL discs ?

Note: Depending on how PAL playback is implemented, you may also need a PAL capable television set to view PAL discs.

Yeah,pal was the first thing I thought of, but my apex 600a plays pal discs no problem. Real wierd.

OK, that's one good step, but does it output PAL or NTSC to the TV? And if PAL, does your TV handle PAL?

Plays in dvdshrink perfectly. Also plays in my friend/s player ok.

Yeah the apex outputs to tv fine. Played a bunch of uk pal disc no prob.

Don't know what the N/P button is. What does it do? I'll check to see if I have one.

Can't figure it out. Burnt with an nec 2500 and a pioneer I think.Tried different dvd formats, dvd-r(fuji, verbatim), dvd+r and different players with no luck. Can't think of what else to try. Is there a newer firmware for my apex ad-600a I could try maybe? Hate to have to gat a new player. Love my apex.

You think trying to burn by changing the bitsetting might work?
