    Hi All,

I recently decided to combine my Pink Floyd "Dark Side Of The Moon" CD with "The Wizard Of Oz" - to create the so called "Dark Side Of Oz" or "Dark Side Of The Rainbow".

I'm pretty sure I can do it technically, it's just that there seems to be issue with the supposed synchronisations (see here). These seem pretty specific, and there's loads of stuff out there that suggests they are true (or pretty close).

I added 5.5 seconds of silence to the front of a continuous single WAV of the CD so that it would match up the start of the CD (WAV) with the third lion roar - as legend says it should be...

However, when I match up my ripped DVD with this adjusted WAV, the first few synchs are fine, then it's out by 2 - 3 seconds (around when Dorothy falls off the fence), then 16 - 17 seconds later on (around when the "witch" on her pushbike arrives at the house). I haven't gone beyond there - I figured it wasn't worth checking.

This, to me, removes any issue with gradual synch loss - I'm wondering if it's to do with the version of the CD and film? The word on the street says that this was first spotted with the original vinyl recording and the original VHS tape. But I'm using:

    * The September 1992 digitally remastered 20th anniversary edition of the CD. The combined WAVs are ripped at 48KHz and the running time is 42m 54s (without the silence added to the front).

    * The 2005 Turner Entertainment Co. "Two Disc Special Edition" PAL region 4 DVD of the film. It runs 97 minutes.

Anybody got any idea what version of audio and video should or can be used to get the synchs right? I know I can order it online, but I'd like to take on the challenge of doing it myself - and having something that matches up.

    Cheers.

At a guess, I would suggest the legend is based on an NTSC version of the film. The PAL version will run approx 4% faster, leading to gradually increasing sync problems. Either source an NTSC version of the film, or format convert it (urgh!)

I have seen the 'modified version', NTSC, and I have a hard time buying into the 'Urban legend' here, as far as the similarities, but happy to move it to General Disscussions.

    Moving you.

That crossed my mind - but I didn't know the percentage difference between the two formats. Now I do - thanks!

I'm toying with idea of buying it (from here) - it's not so expensive as to be prohibitive...

I'll have a ponder and post back if I have any thoughts.

  5. I'm watching it right now and if the bells go off when the Old Lady (wicked witch) shows up on the bicycle to take Toto away you should be in sync.
The DVD I have was made by another person and I used to have a cheat sheet with all the sync's but it seems to be missing.
    LOve the music though.

No, it's at this point that it's about 16 - 17 seconds out. I'm thinking that it's a PAL vs NTSC run-time issue, as guns1inger said.

I've linked to an online reference of over 140 synch's, in the second paragrapah of the opening post.
