I have just downloaded Media Player Classic version 6487.7, but it is not an executable file. How do I get this installed?

the .7z is a compressed file like zip. exctract with winrar.
or download mpc from http://www.free-codecs.com/Media_Player_Classic_download.htm -
The 7z will be a much smaller download. Don't know why they bothered repacking my build as a zip. Perhaps they UPX'ed it?
1.35MB's as a 7z.
1.83 with winzip
1.80 as a zip using 7Zip.
1.55 if you UPX before zipping. -
I don't know about that... MPC now seems to want to crash every time if I compress it with UPX. I just tried it with 6.4.8.7, under XP, and it threw up a runtime error.
Of course, there might be a UPX switch or two I'm missing...
Edit: As for packing it as a zip archive rather than a 7z, it's probably just for the sake of those who don't know what a 7Zip file is.I know there are decompressors available for PCs and Macs, but is there one available for Unix or Linux systems? (Just curious.)
