I have a jvc drmh20s dvd recorder that has a tv tuner, I also have a dvd player with dolby digital surround sound speakers. I want to watch tv with the surround sound & the jvc manual says i can connect it to a dolby digital decoder or amplifier with dts. So i bought a coaxial cable to connect the jvc digital out to the dvd players coaxial connector, but theres no sound! anyone got an idea why it doesnt work? I can connect a vcr to the dvd player with phono leads and watch tv that way so i dont know why the coaxial doesn't work. The dvd player also has a s video out, would that work instead?
thanks

I think I understand this. You want to run the audio (5.1) from your DVR to your player/surround sound amplifier via coaxial (RCA phono) cable. You will have to set your player/surround sound amplifier to select the coaxial input.
Other than that, it should work. The DVR should output a signal on that lead all the time, but you might check the DVR manual in case it has to be selected also. It's unlikely you will get 5.1 sound from over-the-air broadcasts, but you should still get audio. And your surround sound amplifier probably has a setting to make pseudo surround sound. I would try playing a dolby 5.1 DVD in the DVR to test the audio, just in case the audio mutes when tuning a TV channel that has no 5.1. Then you would be assured of a 5.1 signal going out of the DVR.
Many DVRs and DVD players have 3 audio outputs: Stereo (Red and White RCA Phone jacks), Dolby 5.1 Coaxial (Sometimes orange RCA Phono jack), Dolby 5.1 Optical (Fiber optic jack) Both the Coaxial and the Optical outputs are digital audio. The Stereo output is analog.
Some of the older DVD players (I still have one) have the separate phono jacks for 5.1 audio channels. They have the Dolby decoder built in and you have to run all the (5, I think) cables to the amplifier.
In most cases you have to select the proper outputs and inputs on both units for the desired audio to work. Check the manuals for each unit. The coaxial output is probably called that to keep the terminology separate from the stereo and video RCA phono jacks, but a regular RCA phono cable will work. -
now that i'v found the instructions for the 'DVD home theatre' i think i know why the coaxial doesnt work. the manual says;
'the digitl output connectors are used to output the digital audio signal recorded on disks. You can output the digital signal via coaxial output jack to an amplifier.'
So i think the problem is that the coaxial connector is an output & not an input.
There isn't anything in the setup about coaxial input so i guess i'll have to make do with the left & right audio cables untill i get a new system. -
i don't know of any settop recorders that have 5.1 input recording.
