  1. My HD ready RPTV has a 1080i component input, not hdmi.

Does any DVD upconverting player use 1080i output so I can connect to my tv?

Would it make that much of a difference over standard dvd?

  2. The upconverting players produce the most noticeable difference in sharpness and detail with large fixed pixel digital displays (DLP, LCD, LCoS, plasma, etc.)

None of them are supposed to be able to send an upconverted signal through their component video outputs when playing a copy-protected DVD, at least not without a firmware hack. There was a Zenith 318 model that would do it, but they might not be available new anymore. There may be some off-brand Chinese unit out there that does, too... you'd have to do some internet research to find one of those.

If you have a CRT based rear projection big screen, upscaling probably won't make any visible difference.
