Hell all![]()
Guys, Yesterday I connected everything that was needed for my pc to be operational, at least thats what I thought.
I have my cpu with heatsink fan connected, two HDD, one is sata and the other is IDE, vid card, everything. First off, I'm using the HDD thats from my older pc, as a matter of fact, I had to take it back out of my new system and connect again to my old system to post this thread.
The problem is that I can't get the new system to load the OS that is originally installed in the HDD from my old system. When I turn the new system on, it goes to this black screen (3 different screens actually)
The first black screen shows all the drives I have connected and the type of drive of each.
From this screen, I have an option that displays at the very bottom to go into the BIOS by pressing the "del" button. From there I can set Primary, secondary boot drive, the first the second boot drive, I'm sure you know of this section. Anyway, I set the HDD from my old pc as the primary and first boot device because it has the OS installed. After I've done all of that, I press F10 to save BIOS. After that it resets and that it goes through the booting process until I get to the "choose OS" part (It does that on my old pc) After I choose the os, it seems as if it will load, but all the lighst on the keyboard flash in sequence along with other lights, which resemble a restart, but I don't restart the systems, somehow it does it itself. Thats all it does.
I tried just using the new WD HDD, and install a fresh OS on it, but at that first balck screen, it shows, Can't find bootable drive or something like that. It won't allow my to use the F12 button and the beggining so that I could boot from my installation disk thats in my dvd drive.
Can anyone sheds some light on this, I'm very lost![]()
Another strange thing is that I have my WD HDD connected to a SATA port, but in the bios and the first black screen, it show that it is IDE 0 master and the older HDD is IDE 1 masterhrug:

I suggest the following:
Pull the power cable off your new SATA drive (disabling it). Be sure the jumper on the back of the drive is set to Slave. Be sure the jumper on the rear of the old drive is set to Master. My suggestion to have them both on the same IDE cable for now since the SATA is disabled, and have your optical drives on IDE #2 cable.
Set 1st boot device to CD, insert your XPcd and boot; perform a repair reinstall (do not use the repair consol in this case, but the second screen). Possibly your MBR is screwed up on the old drive and this will straighten it out, and any other corruptions there might be on the OS.
Once you are booting clean into XP, power down, plug in the new SATA drive and boot. If you are going to have problems, they will show up. Ideally that drive will appear as an additional drive letter in Explore in XP.
I am not sure if having a regular and SATA drive on the same system is problamatic or not, maybe someone else can fill in on that point. -
I tried that, but it just goes to the first black screen no matter what I have as the first boot drive. In my old system, I could boot from the dvd drive by pressing F12 when the pc logo appears. This send up a dialog box that gives me the choice to boot from a paticular drive. There is no logo when I boot my new system up.
This is not caused by overheating because in bios it shows 53C. My psu is a 500w Antec smart power. The computer will run at the black screen for a long period, the restarting doesn't occur until I choose my OS from the "choose os" screen -
Did you disconnect the SATA drive and use only the older drive? Also try resetting the BIOS back to default. There is usually a jumper on the board, or pull the battery for 20". I have had two occasions where I could not boot a newbuild until I reset the BIOS.

Yes I have disconnected the SATA drive and tried to use only the IDE, but I get the same result.
I'll try resetting the bios, but they were set as default when I first tried a start up.
Damn, this means I'll have to take the HDD out of this pc and put it back in the new pc. and vice versa when I what to post again.
Oh well, its not gonna get done whining about it -
That is wierd that it will not boot from your XPcd even after you set CD boot as #1. Make sure that you have only one optical driver powered (disable the other) to make sure that is the one that the BIOS attempts to access. Then try again with your OEM or retail XP cd in it. If it still refuses to boot from the CDrom, then I would say the problem may be the BIOS itself. I hate to suggest a flash, but if you can't get past the BIOS you are up a creek without a paddle.

I managed to install an os on the new WD HDD, so thats a relief. I tried to create a partion large enough for my OS (1500MB) but after installation, it was just the partion that I created for the os and thats all. What did I do wrong in that regard.
I can't connect to the internet on the new system. I'm showing the network card and stuff but I still can't connect to the internet
Also, it still shows that the WD HDD is IDE 0 Master instead of SATA controller
During the OS installation it asked if I wanted to install third party drivers, When it got to the part of installing the drivers, It asked to insert the floppy disk with the drivers on it into floppy drive A. Well I don't have a floppy drive and I didn't receive a floppy disc with my mobo; it was a CD.
What do I need to do in order for my SATA drives to be seen as SATA devices.
Last thing, now that I'm able to install a OS on the WD HDD, What do I have to do to get my older IDE drive to run the os and the newer WD HDD for storage only?
There's lots of files on the older drive that I need. -

OK, after the os install, I ran the cd with the drivers for my mobo, but I still can't connect to the internet. Is it the same loading the cd after h os install as it is before?
-
Is the network card enabled in BIOS? If it's built onto the mainboard, the CD should have a driver for it.

LAN Type 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit
RJ-45 LAN Port
AS I mentioned earlier, at installation of the os, it asked about the 3rd party drivers, but I don't have a floppy, so I had to continue without installing the drivers at installation. But after installation I ran the cd that came with the mobo. Would runing the cd after installation yeild the same results as runing it during the os install -
I found out that the raid driver and sata drivers absolutely needs to be install by floppy and before the os is install.
The Floppy drive that I had in my old PC isn't working; I have to purchase a new one.
Originally I Had no plans on installing a floppy drive. Sents I'm force to, I have no choice.
Will this drive work:
