I wish to record a movie from tv and put it on dvd. It is an example of 3:2 pulldown (or something like that) where the 23.976 fps were converted to 29.97. It, of course, looks terrible. I understand you are supposed to use ivtc to invert the process. TMPGenc does this well, but I don't understand what the resulting framerate is. I look at it in Avidemux, and it says the clip is 23.976fps. All other apps seem to think it is 29.97. I create a dvd with the clip, and it was fine for slow or little motion. Fast motion was obviously distorted and unnervingly wrong. Not quite jerky, but not smooth.
So, is the result of converting a clip that is 29.97fps that has 3:2 and processing it with ivts produces what framerate. If it is 23.976, can that be burned to dvd. If so, will the result play correctly, or will it apply a similiar 3:2 playback? How can we create a smooth valid dvd from the original clip?

My suggestion would be to do a lot of reading. No really good way to put all the info in one post.
Long story short, normal TV requires interlaced video at NTSC or PAL specs. *If* the original was film at 24 p, then extra fields were added to get it to spec. Unfortunately while you can reverse the proccess on a DVD (the video usually uses directions buried in the file for the DVD player -- not extra fields), doing the same for something broadcast that's captured at spec can be difficult, often not 100% successful.
Sounds like you're going from spec to ivt'd to adding flags for pulldown (as on many DVDs). If your end goal is TV playback, don't bother. If your goal is PC, perhaps use something other then mpg2 & if you do ivt, don't add pulldown flags.
