  1. Currently I've been archiving my digital photos on CD-Rs by burning a data CD. I can then pop that in my DVD player and it will display the picture files on my TV in the form of a slideshow.

I recently acquired a DVD burner and have two questions:

    1. Is a DVD-R any more or less stable of a medium to use to archive my digital photos than a CD-R?

    2. Will a DVD player read/display the files of a data DVD-R the same way it does a data CD-R?

    Thanks.

P.S. Since I am using the data DVD-R mainly to archive the photos, I would not want to author a DVD slideshow.

I think the stability is about the same. A DVD is more scratch resistant on the top layer, though, compared to a CD. If you scratch the top of a CD, it is ruined.

Not all DVD players will show a slideshow from jpg files stored on CDs. Mine will, and it doesn't matter if it is a DVD or CD.

  3. Thanks.

I have a Panasonic f85 and a Sony NS500v. I checked the stats on this site, and it does not indicate that they are DVD-JPEG compatible--bummer.

At least I know it is possible with the right player.

I don't know if your player will play DVD/RW, but you might try it. At least you can reuse the blank. Not all players like the RWs though. And with DVDR blanks selling for less than 40 cents, you wouldn't lose much in trying that too.
