  1. I saw this player on sale for 28 CAD, thought I'd give it a shot since it can play DivX/Xvid. I know it's not the highest quality of players, but I'm trying to salvage as much from it as I can. So bear with me.

This things plays DVDs just fine. It's the Xvid movies (I download all the movies that I own onto Xvid format for backup purposes) files which it seems to stumble with, especially Indian movies. Now at first, there shouldn't be much of a difference between the two, but I guess there is. So far it has played every Enlish Xvid movie perfectly (AC3/MP3 cbr/vbr audio, 1 disc or 2 discs). However, it is having problems with Hindi movies. The though part is that I can't find any consistant trait that the player faulters on. The REALLY weird part is that it will play disc 1 of the Indian movie, but won't play disc 2 (says "UNSUPPORTED AUDIO").

I did some testing, I chose disc 2 of an Indian movie that it didn't play. I stripped the audio track and played it as an mp3 in the player, it worked fine. However, when adding it to an AVI container with the video stream, it screws up.

I'm guessing this must be some kind of bug in the player with disc 2's, but since d1 and d2 are technically identical (assuming it was processed correctly), I'm becoming skeptical. Is it something to do with the way Indian movies are processed?

Any help is appreciated. Please let me know if furhter information is needed, I will do my best. Thanks!

It sounds like you are downloading files of different types and not actually converting your own dvd's. There are many different ways of encoding an avi/xvid/divx file, and not all of the factors are compatible with standalone players.

You will need to start by comparing the working and non working files with a program such as gSpot. This should help point out what is different, if anything.

You also aren't the only person reporting this problem, so it could just be a hardware issue...problem seems to only be related to AC3 audio.

You could reencode the files that don't work, or combine the 2 parts back together and burn on dvd.

  3. You're right, I read around on the net a bit and it seems like some players don't want to take certain AVIs no matter what for whatever reason. But in this case, the ones that don't work are quite a few, so I'm gonna try and find a way around it.

Yea, I've already tried that. I can't find a difference, maybe one of you people will...
CD1 of a movie, which worked on the player

CD2 of the same movie, which gave an "unssupport audio" message [didn't work] Actually, the video played fine after the first attempt despite no audio. With the second attempt of CD2, it didnt play at all. Go figure!(it's just so weird that it will play cd1 but not cd2 of the EXACT same clip, hardware malfunction?)

Are you reffering to the curtis player when you say that a lot of people have this problem? I don't think it's an AC3 issue, because the player has played MANY Xvids with AC3 audio.

I am currently working on trying to combine the two discs so that it will play. This is my plan of action right now cause it seems that this is the only way around the problem, at least for now. However, my attempts have failed, joining with VirtualDub hasn't worked. However, I am trying it with AVI-Mux (with different settings). So far no luck, but I'll keep trying.

Any other feedback/suggestions/requests for info will be greatly appreciated and recieved. Thanks again!

From what I have read, the failure is always with cd2. CD1 seems to play fine, then cd2 will give the unsupported audio error. Sounds like a hardware/firmware issue.

You should be able to just join the 2 files without reencoding.
