Ok, need to get some media fast, so can't wait for shipping via the regular online outlest: supermedia, Meritline, etc.

Noticed Sony on sale this week...Neither of my three pioneer's likes
sony branded CD-Rs, so how will my pioneer -109 ( home), -107 (work)
and -104 ( home) fare with these DVD-Rs?
Or should I go for the Nexxtech, which I see from the Media
forum postings seems to be at best 2nd class media,
    but with good compatiblity rates?

smurfy...you seem to be tops on reccommedning the Sony's this week.
    What's your thoughts?

SONY made in taiwan discs aren't the best in my opinion. I base my experience with the dvd burners that I have. The SONY 100 pack spindles at BEST BUY here in Hawaii are made in taiwan.

I read that STAPLES has a sale on the SONY which are made in japan.

Man.., over the x-mas holiday, I was at Staples in my area,
and recall seeing a sale of (noname) DVD-R disc's on sale
for like $24 bucks (I think) for a 100pk spindle. Darmn.
I wish I bought it then. Cause now that I'm getting Cable,
I'm gonna be doing a lot of 220-s recording and stuff and

(wish they had another similar sale)

    Smurfy, thanks.
I'll take a chance and buy 1 50pack and see.
Still on the fence since their CD-R media doesn't burn
well with my -109 or my -107, (the -104 handles fine
    through iTunes at 24x speed).

off to staples I go..Made in Japan Sony's is what I want right?

The two Staples in my town are out, however,
the Wal-Mart SuperCenter 5 mins from my house
had Spindles on the shelf for $25. Took the Staples ad
in with me, and they pricematched the ad.

Popping one in now to test...DVD Media Inspector says
they are TYG02...label says "Made in Japan". Will
burn a disc and see what I get....

Wait wait...you got TYG02 under Sony Brand? This is new; previously even the 8x DVD-R made in Japan had a Sony media code.

The only SONY DVD-R discs I have seen are 8x and say MADE IN TAIWAN. I bought some in a pinch and they burned OK as far as I can tell on my Pioneer 108 ... played back fine on my Pioneer stand alone DVD player.

I've never seen a package of SONY DVD-R discs that have said MADE IN JAPAN.

    P.S.
I should note that I prefer to burn at 4x or 6x only. Not sure what difference if any that makes on the quality of the burn but I get the "sense" that going 8x or faster is "bad". This is based on the fact that DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn go crazy (the buffer levels) when burning faster than 6x on my Pioneer 108 burner.

After seeing a post here I went to Staples yesterday. They didn't have an MIT discs so I got MIJ's. Hope they work good but at $14.88 a 50 pack it doesn't really matter. Media Code is SONY16D1. Two reports here say they are great. After I finish the Verbatims I have I'll be trying these.

I couldn't find any MIT discs. All they had was 16x MIJs. First time I've tried Sony 16x. I never burn media above or below it's rated burn speed. My buffer doesn't fluctuate at all (NEC3550a) or I should say any more than normal. It's been quite sometime since I've even seen 4x media.

The MADE IN TAIWAN SONY 8x DVD-R's that I had months ago couldn't even be recognized in my Pioneer 220 standalone recorder. For my computer dvd burners I use MADE IN JAPAN SONY DVD+R which are TAIYO YUDEN. I no longer use MADE IN TAIWAN SONY DVD-R & MAXELL as well. The VERBATIM MADE IN TAIWAN DVD-R burns well with the dvd burners that I have.

I've had problems with the Maxell Corp. since the days of R2R work. I haven't bought any of their products since.

What an awful problem to have I've seen 16x Sony DVD+R MIJ (10 pack in jewel cases) but all of the Sony 16x DVD-R I've see are made in Taiwan, code SONY16D1. The MIT ones work well so I'm sure the Japan discs are just as good if not better.

While I've had better compatibility with MIT's I've not really had too many problems with either countries manufacturing processes.

Of course, when I do find problem discs I can usual find someone around here to take them off my hands.

I recently bought some of the Nexxtech media from Circuit City. They had a 25 pack of media (+ or - R) for $5.99, or a 50 pack for $26.99 (very strange!) I bought one pack of -R and 4 packs of +R. Both formats are rated at 8x.

The -R media comes up as 12x when I go to burn.
The +R mecia comes up as 16x when I go to burn.

I've tried both at these speeds and the media burns and plays fine.

    Oh man...Supermedia store is offering 200 8x DVD-R Taiyo Uden's

OK, I'll give my opinion here. I can't speak for the Sony discs, as I've honestly NEVER used them, but I have bought NexxTech discs in large amounts from Circuit City as they normally have a good sale on them, but with my most recent batch, many coasters have been made due to what I assume is bad media. Some discs would not start a burn, while others would burn approximately 10% and halt. So far, I'm at about a 30% failure rate. In cost comparison, it's still cheaper to get NexxTech, but it's definitely a pain in the butt to have a burn aborted as frequently as it has been happening.

Nexxtech Are a good media if you know how to tell the media codes before you buy. Make sure you stay away from media code UMEDISC this are the worts ones they got.
