MPEG2 wrong size?

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been covered before, I couldn't find any ref. to it, but searching for things like 'MPEG2', 'wrong' and 'size' brings up many many results (not relating to my problem)?!

Essentially, I have a Nova-T USB that I'm using to record digital tv using Showshifter. Mostly it's good, but some channels it seems to record at 544*576, but the files are reported (by AVOCodec for example) as 2.21:1. I have read that this is a genuine DVB resolution, but I don't get where the aspect ration figure comes from?!

So anyway, my main question is, is it possible to somehow resize these files to a standard dvd resolution, say 720*576.

Thanks in advance, and again, apologies if these has been covered many times - if anyone can point me at an appropriate thread I'll be very grateful.

PS I meant to say, the files appear widescreen in WMP, NOT as square as the resolution would seem to suggest.

2.21:1 is a widescreen format...the image is 2.21 times as wide as it is tall. Although I expect it is closer to 1.85:1

It could be like a half D1 resolution, where the 544 is doubled during playback..so you have a resolution of 1088x576.

I get 1.89:1. Try a resize to 720 x 560, with letterboxing out to 576. Encode as 16:9 and see what it looks like.

The 544 x 576i, Aspect Ratio 4:3 is broadcasting in France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5, ARTE and LCP (R1 multiplexer), you can refer to the following links :
