I made this post a while ago: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=267460&highlight=

I now just reformated my computer last night and now when i try to burn a DVD or rip a DVD it takes over 2 hours. I put the secondary channel thing to DMA mode and it is runnin on ultra DMA mode it says but it is still taking forever. The primary channell is running PIO mode but Im not sure how to change that. It is set on DMA if available, but for some reason it is using PIO mode. I honestly cant remember what it was using before the format. This is my first time reformating since I have been backing up my DVDs so I'm not exactly sure what might have gone wrong. DVD Decryptor is ripping at 0.8x Thats crazy slow. It usually takes about 10-15 min to rip a DVD. IM nost sure whats going on. I'm using DVD Decryptor 3..5.4.0 to rip and Nero 6 Ultra to burn. If you need more info or anything let me know.

    Thanks alot.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I tried reinstalling the Primary channel as well. no luck. I idnt want to do the firlmware thing b/c of the warning and I dont really know what I am doing.

Have you read this sticky in the dvd to dvdr forum?:

Maybe that will point you in the right direction
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Yeah i did. That was what I was refering to in my edit about the warning. If you read about the firmware thing it suggests in that post, it gives a warning that doing the firmware could mess things up. Thanks though.

  4. I think I've run across your problem myself. You mentioned about seeing the PIO mode?

Here's one way to check/get it out of PIO mode. Which has worked for me in the past, and sure don't appear to be destructive.

    Steps to take.

    1. bring up your Desktop
    2. right click on "MY COMPUTER"
    3. Scroll down to properties.
    4. Click on HARDWARE Tab
    5. Click on DEVICE MANAGER
    6. Locate IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
You should see Primary IDE Channel and Secondary IDE Channel (Might also see VIA Bus Master IDE Controller)
The ones your concerned with are the Primary/secondary Channel(s).
    7. Right Click on Primary IDE Channel
    Select PROPERTIES
    Select ADVANCED SETTINGS Tab
Transfer Mode: (Should say) DMA if available
Current Transfter Mode: (should say) DMA 2/DMA 4/ Ultra DMA MODE. It SHOUlDN'T say PIO ONLY.
    8. Do same check on Secondary IDE Channel.
IF Either of them says for "Current Transfer Mode" PIO ONLY. Then thats most likly the problem.

NOW.. what I did to fix it (on XP Home). In the Device Manager Window (might even still have it up).

In my case it was always Secondary IDE Channel that would randomly go into PIO Only Mode. I would right click on Secondary IDE Channel, and Select UNINSTALL. After I Uninstalled the IDE Channel that was giving me a headache, I'd then reboot (Warm or Cold) and when the comp. restarted it would find the Uninstalled IDE Channel and reinstall it, and normally either in Some form of DMA Mode (for my DVD reader/DVD Burner) I would end up with DMA 2 as the default mode. you can redo the above check to make sure it's in DMA mode and not PIO Mode.

At the very least the first part will tell you if you have something *Stuck* in PIO mode.

If you have your burner on the secondary IDE channel then you don't have to go through all this crap to fix it. Read this post -> https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1419738#1419738

I was where you are with the PIO problem, but this got things working again.

As far as I can remember when i was ripping the DVD, the secondary channel was running DMA and the primary chanell was running PIO. Im not really sure what is wrong with my comp. I dont know what the guy who reformated it did wrong but everything is running slower, even though there is almost nothing on my computer now and it is very cleaned up, it is running worse then before the reformat. I first noticed it with the DVD burning/ripping but I just tried playing a game that I can usually play with all the setttings turned on HIghest and have a framerate of 60, but now i have the settings on normal and have a framerate of 20. Also, alot of my programs in general are just running slower and I got alot of notresponding windows. I'm not sure if all of these things can be related or if it is a number of problems resulting from the reformat....If anyone knows what might have gone wrong please let me know. I know that this isnt really DVD related anymore and I apologize, that when i first noticed the problem, doing DVD stuff, so thats why I started this post. I realised the other problems after I made the first post on this thread.

everything is running slower cause your hard drive is on the primary channel, and it is set to pio mode.
in device manager, select primary ide channel and select uninstall. reboot computer and check it again. it should go back to dma.

Did you open your computer when you reformatted? If so it is possible that you loosened your ide cable. This is the common cause of the dma to pio mode problem. Alos, if your MB chipset maker has it's own ide drivers, you might try them instead of the MS ones.

Another thought. If the reason you reformatted your drive was because you were getting errors or file corruption, it might be that your HD is going bad which can cause DMA to pio.

My computer is a laptop so I know that your first post is not the case winifreid, but I would not be surprised if your second suggestion is the problem. The initial reason i reformatted was because it has been over a year and a half since I last did it. My computer was getting pretty messy and running slower then it should have been. It needed a good cleanup. Since this problem I reformated again and that solved the problem. HOwever, my comp seems to be freezing alot and getting the "not Responding end now" window. So I wouldnt be surprised if some hardware is crappin out. But as of right now the new reformat did the trick. Thanks for your help guys
