hi, i have an epson r300. i also have verbatim photo printable dvd-rs/. i have no problem using my cheap cartriges for printing covers but what about on the disks. If the ink is not made special is it going to ruin my disk, i.e if it condensates over a few months and makes my disk un readable

Unless your inks contain some kind of acid, I can't see where there would be any harm to the playablility of the disc. Cheap ink problems I have heard about usually revolve around drying time and/or fading over time but I've never heard of a good disk going bad because of the ink that was used.

Some of the really cheap inks have even been known to start fires when played back in DVD players.

Seriously doubt it, from what I understand the ink and media is made. On regular media from bottom up, you basically have the optically transparent layer, then writable media layer, then back substrate, then more of the layer. On printable ones, you have one more layer on top that actually absorbs a little ink. Unless your ink can eat through both the ink layer AND and backing it can't affect readability.

I could be wrong, of course.

If you're that worried, use actual labels, or use Lightscribe drives and Lightscribe media.

Any links to the fires caused by inks? I've never heard of this.

I would suggest NOT using stick-on labels on dvd's. Many folks have reported playability problems afterwards. I can't imagine how cheap ink could impact playability of inkjet printable dvd media - unless, as someone said, it actually corrodes through the print layer down to the disc itself. If the ink was capable of doing that, I imagine it would be doing the same thing to any paper you've used it on also?
