I'm an American living in Japan looking for a good quality DVD player to play region 1 and region 2 DVDs. I've been thinking about getting the Pioneer DV-383-S player. What's the difference between a region free player like the DV-383 and a regular player that's hacked to be region free? Are there pros and cons of going one route or the other? Thanks!

Warranty is the big item. Buy one region free and manufacturer has to honour the warranty. Get someone else screwing around inside it, and all bets are off. Otherwise, not much difference.

  3. Many players can be made region free with a few button presses on the remote control. They can always be set back to the home region if warranty becomes an issue. Or just thrown away.
