    Hi!

My old Philips region free DVD player died, and I need a new one....anyone have any suggestions? Would like an upscaling one.

I tried an SDK1000 from Costco since the older version (SDK990) was easily converted, but had no luck with those codes.

If anyone has a good blu ray player tip, that would be cool too.

BD can go from $70 to $2200 easily, so you might want to restrain the search by mentioning a budget, especially when mentioning "best player".

Neighbor, check out this link from one of VideoHelp's fine advertisers:

Most are pretty expensive, but there's a JVC listed for $160.

I'd Say less than $100 for the regular DVD, and less than $175 for blu ray. Don't need anything fancy.

Momitsu and Oppo make BluRay players for sale in the USA that are region free for both BluRay and DVD playback. Whoever sells the Momitsu to you will have already made a hardware modification to it necessary to support this. The Oppo requires a hardware mod for this purpose and you'll have to check to see if whoever sells it has already done it for you or if you have to replace some hardware yourself. The Oppo won't fit into your budget for sure though. Not sure about the Momitsu.

Note that it is becoming more difficult all the time in North America to find any DVD players that can be made region free. Sony and Samsung players are essentially impossible to be made region free in North America right now. Even Philips, who used to not make a player anywhere that couldn't become region free, has stopped making as many. There really are no guarantees with anything you buy in a store, so be sure you can return it if you can't make it region free. One of the Philips models is said to still be able to be made region free, but I don't remember which one.

Manufacturers make hardware changes during production that break hack codes that worked in the past. Also, sometimes there are hardware differences between models sold in different parts of the world so the code may work fine on models sold in, say, Australia but not on the same model as sold in North America.
