Hello, I'm an encoder and I've been encoding stuff from .mkv and .ogm for about 3 years now and this new h.264 codec is giving me problems. I usually use mkvextractorGUI 1.5.5 to split up my encodes so that I can get he sound and media file out to put them back together in vitualdubmod. hat I dont get is the new media file is something like avc/yug/??? or something like that. When I try to extract that file It always brings up a prompt asking me what textention to put in at the end. and when I tell it .avc it freaks out and doesnt split it. Im wondering if there is a way to bring h.264 to .avi so that I can continue putting it into .rmvb format. I know that the file sizes are low in h.264 but Im an oldie and I like all my files to be in 1 format, not 2. could someone tell me how to do this?? thanks.

The extension you should be using is .264. This is the correct extension for a raw AVC stream.

I really don't get it though; you want rmvb, so you create an avi? Producer accepts input via dshow. It should have no problems opening a mkv file.

That said, if you really must have an avi, then you can use avc2avi.

no it doesnt have problems opening it, it has problems splitting it up cause it doesnt accept the .264 extention saying that it doesnt have the codec needed to decode i. thanks for the extention though

Mainconcept's H.264 encoder should give you the neccesary Directshow decoder support. Free trial version with watermark encoding at http://www.mainconcept.com

Nero also I believe supports raw AVC streams. Why bother though? If you leave it in an mkv then you don't need to worry about raw AVC support.
