  1. I recently purchases this fine machine, but cannot figure out why the Auto Chapter featute is not working when Recording to HDD. I have it set for every 10 minutes, and Video mode set to On. It did work once or twice but now it does not mark chapters at all.
Has anyone come across this yet?

I think if you check the user's manual the Auto chapter only works when recording directly to a video-mode DVD or when copying in real time from the HDD to a video-mode DVD.

Whenever you press pause while recording to the HDD or whenever you delete content from a recording, you'll automatically get a chapter marker at that point. That may be why you had some on the HDD previously.

  7. Well I tried Burning a 1 hour program to DVD-RW as one respondant mentioned, hoping I would have Chapters marks Automatically inserted into the final DVD.
I had video mode on and DVD initialized to Video Mode, as well as auto chapter On set for 10 Minutes. My DVD did not have any chapter points in it when I played it back...Am I doing this right, or do I have a bug in my unit?
    Thanks

  8. I suspect you did a high speed transfer from hdd to dvd-rw video mode. Only a realtime transfer from hdd to dvd-rw video mode will give you the chapters.

  9. I just got the 533 and I'm having similar issues. The manual is unhelp so far. It just mentions chapter points. Yet, from what I discovered on my own here is what I found out so far. If you tape a two hour show on the HDD the only way to get the 10 minute chapter marks is to let it dub over in real time mode. No fast speed dubing. Fast speed will be one big file with no chapter marks. Real time will take you 2 hours if you recorded a 2 hour show but will put in the chaper marks.

Now, if you take the video on your HDD and edit it by say cutting out commericals, or something like that, every time you make a "cut" or edit in the video it will make a new chapter. It will remember that chapter and will put in that chapter mark when you fast speed dub to the disk.

Basically, from what I found out so far. If you tape a 2 hour show that has commericals or somthing you can edit out along the way, you can make chapter marks and use the high speed dub. If you taped a 2 hour movie with no commericals (say an HBO movie) then the only way to get chapter marks in it is to do a real time, no fast speed, dub. The real time dubbing will put in those 10 minute chapter marks as it moves from HDD to disk.

You are correct. If you want time-interval chapter marks AND to do a high-speed copy from the hard drive, you need to enter the Chapter Edit mode and (or whatever the 533 calls the mode where you enter chapter marks) and press the commercial skip button multiple times to quickly advance the video to the next point where you want to manually enter the marker.

I have a Pioneer DVR-531H-s and I too have noticed no chapters on my stuff but it doesn't bother me because ...

I just copy everything from the HDD to a DVD-RW and then re-author on the computer using TMPGEnc DVD Author ... which makes setting chapter points ridicules easy ... then burn to a DVD-R disc using my PC burner.

I then erase the DVD-RW for the next transfer.
