OK here is the situation. I have a friend that I sent a couple DVDs to (which are personal and completely legal) and he is trying to copy them using his DVD recorder, but it stalls at 91-92% on every program he has tried. One program (don't remember which one it was, but) it said the disc was too big, by 10MB)

The copies I sent him were copied using DVD Decryptor and didn't have any issues. I told him to use it and he gets the following message:

    ******************
    "I/O error!
    Device: [1:0:0] Samsung DVD-Rom SD-616 F000 (d:') (ATA)
    ScsiStatus 0x02
    Interpretation: Check Condition
    CDB: 28 00 00 20 43 20 00 00 01 00
    Interpretation: Read (10) Sector: 2114336
    Sense area: 70 00 03 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 11 00 00 00 00 00
    Interpretation: Unrecovered Read Error

    Abort, Retry, Ignore...
    *******************

He has the following DVD/CD drives on his computer:
    _NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A USB Device
    HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8400B
    SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616...

I'm hoping someone has answers to what his problem is. I just noticed in the error message above that his problem was with the Samsung DVD-Rom drive so I'm going to have him try it in the NEC. Anyone else have ideas or have had a similar situation that they have figured out.

    Thanks,
    Rob

  2. Is that a new drive ? can he run a Laser Cleaner disc into it ? best possible secondary choice would be to get a cheapo DVD rom drive and see if he can read it (can always return it as faulty if it doesn't!).

  3. Only the NEC drive can write to a dvd, the HL is for cd's, and the Samsung is read only. Seems like the Samsung cannot read your disks.

Have you tried to copy the discs you sent your friend? Read errors at the outer edge of the disc indicates bad media, with read errors. Just try using different rippers - like DVDFab Decrypter - some might be tolerant enough. Or why don't you make him a copy yourself, for him to keep?

I talked to him today and it sounds like all DVDs that he has tried copying give him this error. So it looks like it is something with his setup. I'm having him see if he has the latest drivers for his DVD drives.

...still, pretty confident the source DVD is a bad burn. Has he tried backing up a mint commercial DVD?

I'm having the same problem, and have started a new thread about it, in case anyone.has any answers. It seems to be an NEC incompatibility.
