It may not be a simple binary proposition like "seeing" or "not seeing" your Mad Dog firewire burner. To get better integration - like the Finder reacting when you insert a blank DVD - you may need Patchburn. Patchburn is donationware which tries to create a custom OS X profile of your 3rd party burner, so that it works better. Please let us know if this helps.

Some other obvious questions: Are you sure you have the Mad Dog burner selected in Toast? Do you have the latest version of Toast? Can you insert a blank DVD at a different point in the process so that it gets noticed? Will Disk Utility let you burn an .img file to the Mad Dog burner? If you insert a pre-recorded DVD with data or a movie, does it work?

Note: LaCie burners tend to be better tested on the Mac side. If returning the Mad Dog and getting a LaCie is an option, you might consider it.
