There are guides and tools to your left. You can search by type of conversion (e.g. avi -> DVD). There are many ways and many tools. They range from the simple to the complex, from one or two steps to many steps. Generally speaking, the more steps, the better the quality.

If you want to start simply, you can begin with DivxtoDVD. There is a free version, as well as a pay version. It will take one or more avi files and create a DVD structure that can be burned to a DVD as DVD Video, playable in any player. The quality is OK - perhaps a little software than the source - and the speed is good. No menus will be created though. It is probably the best of the one-click-wonder type programs, and a good starting point for beginners.
