I'm hoping one of you with more experience than me can shed some light on this situation. I can't run the TV App of ATI's MMC without it hanging/freezing anywhere from thirty seconds to five minutes after opening it. Once it stops responding and I click "Restart," Windows begins to shut down, but gets stuck. I have to manually click on the RESTART or POWER button to shut down. I have tried everything on the ATI Support site and in their knowledge base. I just submitted a problem report to ATI's customer support, but I'm hoping against all odds someone out there has run into this problem before and can help me. Here's my setup:

    - ATI All-In-Wonder X600Pro
    - ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe motherboard with NVIDIA nForce4 chipset
    - AMD 64 3800+ processor
    - 1 GB memory
    - Two 120GB HDDs
    - Windows XP SP2
    - MMC 9.08
    - Soundblaster Live! 32-bit sound card internally wired to All-In-Wonder card
    - JVC HR-S9911U VCR for playback.
    - Monster S-Video cables

BIOS and ALL drivers are up-to-date. I am following all the "best practices" for capturing and avoiding dropped frames (i.e. capturing to a separate drive from the one Windows is running on, unplugging Ethernet cable before capturing, adjusting sound settings, etc.). I am attempting to capture as MPEG-2 DVD using the settings EXACTLY as described on www.digitalfaq.com "Capturing MPEG with ATI AIW cards," EXCEPT that I am attempting to capture at 720x480 resolution. Accordingly, I have changed my max bit rate to 8.00 M Bit/Second and Target Bit Rate to 7.80 M Bit/Second. I am using the Salt and Pepper VideoSoap at 17%, as recommended on that site.

Does LordSmurf or any other AIW pros know of any MMC TV setting that might be causing this application to hang/freeze on me? Or is this a problem for ATI's product support specialists?

ATI told me that submitting a problem report, as I have just done, may not elicit a response for weeks or months. Any suggestions (i.e. screw it and buy a new PCI Express motherboard)? I've invested about $2,000 in this hardware and don't want to give up on it, but I'm very frustrated! Your expertise, as always, is very much appreciated!

Sounds like hardware conflicts, or a corrupted install of ATI MMC. It's not anything you've done, it's not ATI MMC settings.

The rage3d.com forums may have some help for installation issues. They don't have much on the video aspect of ATI, but they do have a decent amount of install and graphics info.

FWIW, I had all kinds of problems, and ending up installing MMC 8.8 and haven't had a problem since.

Lordsmurf knows much more than I do in the matter, but this was my personal experience/nightmare with MMC.

  4. your computer specs is good, I have a AIW9700 pro works well. With my experience you need to uninstall and re-install the latest again. They have an uninstall utility at ATI. They have 2 mmc one is a .net and has fancy setup manager if you have that update your .net framework it is a windows update option. The other one is simpler and maybe better for you try both and use new TV version.
