This is just a general question about burning dvd9 vs. dvd5. I've been burning dvd +r discs for a long time and very rarely had any problems burning or when playing them back. A couple of months ago I purchased a dual layer dvd burner and have had about a 80% success rate (maybe a little higher)
Many of the discs will pause or totally get stuck when playing back in a DVD player. And sometimes when I go to burn the disc (using various popular burning software) it will get stuck at the very beginning of burning and I will have to abort.
Obviously it's a big time saver using dual layered discs, because you don't have to "shrink" the data. But if I'm making more coasters and have to reburn the discs, it takes more wasted time than not.
The other reason for using dual layered discs is supposedly better picture quality.
As I said this is just a general question asking other people's experiences. That's why I'm not mentioning any brand names of hardware or media, I just wanted to know if it is generally more difficult to burn and playback dual layered discs. Is it worth it?
Thanks for any advice.

I've been doing some more reading here in the forums and one thing I read is that Memorex DL discs (which I have been using) are not as reliable as Verbatim, so I just ordered myself some Verbatim discs and see if that helps cut down the coaster count.

1. DL will have better video quality (if the movie you are making is more than 4.37GB) If the moive is under that than there is no need for DL or shrinking(compressing the movie, thus making its video quality less than original or DL.)

I have a Sony DVD Player which has a display option to show you which layer the player is at. I found Memorex and Ritak DL media to freeze when it hits the second layer. Layer 0 will play fine. It seems some standalones have issues reading the second layer. Only use Verbatim now and have had no issues.

Hello Leee, I have been burning DL's for around a year or so now and have had lots of trouble into the past w/stuttering playback and incomplete burns due to various disc errors. I have better success these days b/c I'm more experienced .... I burn from iso instead of _ts for one, this seems to perserve the layer breaks ... and .... two, I've learned to stay away from Ritek/Ridata (which nearly breaks my heart b/c at one time Ritek was the only media I'd buy!). So, I don't know if this will be of any useful information to you ... however, these are my experiences w/DL.
Warm holiday wishes to everyone!
