TMPGEnc Plus producing jumpy results

Could it be that I set the max bitrate too high(9.8mb/s)? It's a progressive source, so I know field order is not the problem.

Could be. Try setting it at or lower than 9000. (remember the audio bitrate is important too).

thanx. If I lower max bitrate to 8000kb/s, how would that affect picture quality?

Once you get that high you're not going to see a noticeable difference. You definitely won't notice when you get it to DVD and play on a regular TV.

What is the source and how did you create it?
Is it jumpy only when there is movement, or also with still video?
Is it fine on PC, but jumpy on TV?

Usually if your bitrate is too high, the player will skip to next chapter or error out.

the source is from a DVD movie. its only jumpy at points of slow motion. I lowered max bitrate to 8000 kb/s, and it seems better. It plays fine on computer, but jumpy on tv.

If it's Progressive, then camera pans will allways cause some picture jump. Slow motion should be smooth unless the camera is also moving.

If it's interlaced, then the picture should play smooth, unless the field order is incorrect.

yeah, I notice that when encoding interlaced DVD movies at 9800kb/s, still plays fine and smooth. So for progressive sources, I just lower the bitrate. that's the solution right?
