Firewire transfer is just that, a data transfer which will give you a DV avi file on your hard drive. Some software can encode to mpeg during the capture but an on-the-fly encode won't be particularly good quality. AFAIK nothing exists that will encode to Xvid on-the-fly. You'll need to transfer as DV avi and then convert later.

To add to what Richard_G said, the camcorder pass-through converts analog video to a realtime DV stream. The stream can be directed to a file (e.g. WinDV) or it can be directed to another interface (e.g. a second IEEE-1394 port), a display driver or a realtime process (e.g. Mainconcept MPeg2 encoder).

To do what you desire, there needs to be a Xvid encoder with realtime mode and your computer needs to be fast enough to keep the buffers from overflowing and causing dropped frames.

If you first save the live stream to a DV-AVI file, a non-realtime encoder can take its time and reaccess data if buffers overflow.
