Creating Subtitles

There are lots of useful stuff in this Forum about subtitles (among many other things, of course); but there’s one thing I cannot find in here, nor in the Guides’ section: how do I create my own subtitles for my home made videos? That is, I want to add some subtitles written by me to those videos in one, two or even three different languages (my native language - portuguese - for hearing impaired; in english, for some friends in the US; and, eventually, in french too).

All I can see here is stuff related with importing and the manipulation of subtitles got from other DVDs or downloaded from the internet, but nothing related with starting from scratch (correct me if I’m wrong; if there’s already a topic about this, please give me the link).

Just in case it could help, my current working material is 1) Pinnacle Studio 9 and/or Ulead VideoStudio 9 for video editing, 2) TMPGEng for encoding and 3) DVD-lab Pro for DVD authoring.

I'm using https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=VisualSubSync

Very easy to use. Creates basic SRT files. DVDLab Pro will Import the srt file without any problems making the subtitle stream. You would use DVDLab Pros subtitle editor to import and set the style and position for the subs. I've been working on my vacation video and it's been great.

Once you get into the subtitle edit process Sub Alpha Station gives you MUCH more control up front. But for a quick and easy creation on content VisualSubSync will get you started fast

I use subrip , to load vob's , and rip them out via bmp ocr , then save as srt format .

I edit these in developers pad or notepad , depending on how long they are .

These can be loaded into submagic , then go to video , and even though it say's avi , load the vob or mpeg related to that subtitle that was imported .

That's just for checking how it performs in timing .

Then to convert , it's txt2sup , just works better this way .

Ifoedit , rejig or muxman to mux video stream , audio stream , and the new subtitle stream into one .

My next guide will have working with subtitles ... more to do with chapters and timings ... should be up just after xmas , just go down to the subtitle section for what your interested in .

This guide has been a work in progress for the last 3 week's , and is nearly completed .
