    I have a Dell desk top Pen 4, 1.6Ghz, 512MB
I am looking for a good DVD writer, that comes with all the software etc.
Let me know which brands and model that have work well.

I see there is a Sony DVD writer goign for $79 with Nero 6.6 suite that looks good. Any suggestions?

Also what it takes to copy from a VHS directly to a DVD writer?

    Thanks

Look for the latest NEC or Pioneer drives, you can't go wrong. You cannot go directly from VHS to a DVD writer (unless you mean DVD recorder) you will need one of the following -

capture card - Hauppauge 250,350 ATI AIW.
firewire capture device - Canopus ADVC models, Datavideo DAC.
DVD recorder - loads to choose from, Pioneer, JVC and Panasonic seem to be highly regarded.
He's a liar and a murderer, and I say that with all due respect.

  3. You can also use a Digital camcorder that allows for analog to digial pass thru.

I second the Pioneer 110 recommendation. I just read a review of it at cdfreaks and the disc quality scans are real decent:
