  1. I just read an article "http://msn.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,124312,00.asp?GT1=7645" that states a cd that was made with a cd burner will last only 2 to 5 years. Is this correct? It is also recommended that archival data be put on magnetic tape. I could use some guidance on this subject as I have been putting 8mm, scanned photos, video, etc. on DVD for storage.

    Thanks,
    azbound

This article seems to have generated alot of topics in these forums. I guess the author served his purpose and we've done ours by exposing the lies presented in that topic.

Magnetic tape media is subject to more mechanical breakdowns and failures then burnt media.

    Just for testing purpose:
    1) Turn your oven on 85 degrees.
    2) Put an egg timer on 10 minutes.
    3) Take a magnetic tape and a burnt CD(Label side down) and place them on a cookie sheet into the oven for 10 minutes.

Now try and read the info from both medias. Your results may vary but the CD will more than likely have no problem reading while the tape(if you can unstick it from the tray) will be nothing but garbled mess.

*Warning: this test may cause damage to your tape deck!
